Saxophone Colossus — Sonny Rollins

Sonny Rollins

Saxophone Colossus

First released

Saxophone Colossus was recorded by Sonny Rollins in September 1956 at Rudy Van Gelder's studio in Hackensack, New Jersey, with Van Gelder himself as the engineer. The album featured Rollins' working quartet at the time, including pianist Tommy Flanagan, bassist Doug Watkins, and drummer Elvin Jones on most tracks. The recording sessions were notable for capturing Rollins' powerful tenor saxophone tone and his emerging style as a composer and improviser, though some tracks featured different rhythm section members. The album's most famous track, "St. Thomas," became one of Rollins' signature pieces and showcased his ability to build extended improvisations on a calypso-influenced melody. Released in 1957 by Columbia Records, Saxophone Colossus established Rollins as a major force in jazz and remains a landmark recording in tenor saxophone history.
