Way Out West is a jazz album by saxophonist Sonny Rollins recorded on March 7, 1957, at the Contemporary Records studio in Los Angeles. The album was produced by Lester Koenig, founder of Contemporary Records, with engineer Roy DuNann handling the technical aspects. The recording featured Rollins with pianist Ray Brown and drummer Shelly Manne in an intimate trio setting, which was an unconventional choice for the era as it stripped away typical horn section accompaniment. The session took place during Rollins's productive period on the West Coast and resulted in one of his most acclaimed works, showcasing his improvisational abilities in a minimalist instrumental context. The album was released in 1957 and has since become regarded as a landmark recording in modern jazz history.
