Superunknown was recorded at The Consensual Hall studio in Seattle from 1993 to 1994 under the direction of producer Ron Saint Germain, who had previously worked with the band on Soundgarden. The album was engineered by Saint Germain alongside the band members, with mixing taking place at One on One Recording Studios in Los Angeles. The recording process emphasized the band's heavier, more experimental direction compared to their previous work, incorporating drop-tuned guitars and more complex song structures. Released in March 1994, Superunknown became one of the most successful albums of the grunge era and helped establish Soundgarden as a major force in alternative rock during the height of Seattle's music scene dominance.
