Getz / Gilberto — Stan Getz / João Gilberto featuring Antônio Carlos Jobim

Getz/Gilberto was recorded in March 1964 at the A&R Studios in New York City, marking a landmark collaboration between American saxophonist Stan Getz and Brazilian guitarist and vocalist João Gilberto, with composer Antônio Carlos Jobim. The album was produced by Creed Taylor, who worked with engineer Phil Ramone to capture the intimate bossa nova sound that would define the project. The sessions featured a stripped-down arrangement with minimal instrumentation, primarily focusing on Getz's saxophone, Gilberto's vocals and guitar, Jobim on piano, and a small rhythm section, which allowed for clarity and interpersonal musical dialogue. The album's success was significantly amplified by the inclusion of the song "The Girl from Ipanema," which became a massive international hit and helped bring bossa nova to mainstream audiences worldwide. Getz/Gilberto won the Grammy Award for Album of the Year in 1965 and remains one of the best-selling jazz albums of all time, establishing the template for how bossa nova would be commercially presented to Western audiences.
