Steely Dan

Gaucho

First released

Gaucho, released in 1980, was recorded primarily at The Village Recorder in Los Angeles under the production of Steely Dan core members Donald Fagen and Walter Becker. The album's creation spanned several years with sessions beginning in 1978, reflecting the band's meticulous and perfectionist approach to recording, including extensive overdubbing and multiple takes to achieve their desired sonic quality. Engineer Roger Nichols, who had worked extensively with Steely Dan since their debut, played a crucial role in the technical execution of the album. The production utilized the latest recording technology available at the time, including advanced multitrack recording techniques and sophisticated mixing methods. Gaucho marked one of the final major releases before Steely Dan's initial breakup, and it achieved commercial and critical success, reaching number two on the Billboard 200 chart.
