Katy Lied, Steely Dan's second studio album, was recorded primarily at The Record Plant in Los Angeles during 1974, with additional sessions at other LA studios. The album was produced by Gary Katz, who worked closely with songwriters Donald Fagen and Walter Becker to achieve the band's increasingly sophisticated sound. Engineer Roger Nichols played a crucial role in the recording process, helping to realize the duo's exacting vision through meticulous attention to detail and innovative studio techniques. The production featured session musicians including Jeff Porcaro on drums and multiple takes to perfect arrangements, reflecting Steely Dan's perfectionist approach to recording. Released in 1975, Katy Lied showcased the group's evolution toward more complex jazz-influenced pop arrangements and became one of their most commercially successful albums.
