Steely Dan

Pretzel Logic

First released

Pretzel Logic, Steely Dan's second studio album, was recorded primarily at The Record Plant in Los Angeles during 1974 under the production of Gary Katz, who had also produced their debut. The album featured the band's increasingly sophisticated approach to studio recording, with meticulous attention to detail in arrangements and overdubbing that would become characteristic of the group. Key engineer Roger Nichols worked on the sessions, contributing to the polished sound that defined the album. The recording process reflected the band's perfectionist ethos, utilizing multi-track recording techniques to layer complex instrumental and vocal arrangements. Pretzel Logic was released in February 1974 and marked a commercial and critical success, establishing Steely Dan's signature sound of jazz-influenced pop with intricate production.
