Steve Earle

Copperhead Road

First released

Copperhead Road was recorded in 1988 at Capitol Studios in Hollywood, California, with producer Tony Brown who had previously worked with Earle on his debut album. The album marked a significant departure from Earle's earlier acoustic-oriented sound, featuring a fuller, more rock-oriented production style with prominent electric guitars and synthesizers. Engineer Bugs Weidel worked alongside Brown to achieve the record's polished yet energetic sonic character. The title track became one of Earle's signature songs, featuring a distinctive guitar riff and addressing themes of drug trafficking in rural Appalachia. The album was released in 1988 and represented Earle's commercial breakthrough, reaching higher chart positions than his previous work while maintaining his songwriting credibility.
