Stevie Wonder

Innervisions

First released

Innervisions was recorded primarily at the Record Plant Studios in Los Angeles between 1972 and 1973, with additional sessions at other LA-based facilities. Stevie Wonder served as the primary producer and arranger, working alongside engineer John Fischbach and other collaborators, demonstrating his increasing creative control over his work. The album was notable for Wonder's extensive use of synthesizers and multitrack recording techniques, showcasing his technical mastery as he played numerous instruments himself. The production took place during a pivotal period in Wonder's career when he was renegotiating his contract with Motown Records and asserting greater artistic autonomy. Innervisions was released in August 1973 and became a commercial and critical success, earning Wonder the Grammy Award for Album of the Year in 1975.
