Innervisions was recorded primarily at the Record Plant in Los Angeles during 1972-1973, with additional sessions at other studios including the famous Sound Factory and Record Plant in New York. Stevie Wonder served as the primary creative force and producer, working alongside engineer John Fischbach and producer-engineer Jeff Porcaro, who contributed significantly to the album's distinctive sound. The album featured innovative use of synthesizers and drum machines, particularly the ARP synthesizer and early Moog equipment, which were relatively new technologies for R&B music at the time. Wonder played multiple instruments on the tracks and employed multitrack recording techniques to create the album's layered, sophisticated arrangements. Released in August 1973, Innervisions won the Grammy Award for Album of the Year in 1975 and marked a creative peak in Wonder's artistic evolution, blending soul, funk, and progressive production techniques.
