Stevie Wonder served as the primary producer alongside John Fischbach, and the album featured engineering work by John Fischbach and other technical staff who helped Wonder realize his ambitious vision. The recording process was notably extended and meticulous, with Wonder utilizing multitrack recording techniques and synthesizers extensively, particularly the ARP and Moog synthesizers that became signature elements of the album's sound. The double album was recorded during a period when Wonder had creative and contractual freedom, allowing him to experiment broadly across genres including funk, soul, jazz, and pop.
