Songs in the Key of Life — Stevie Wonder

Stevie Wonder

Songs in the Key of Life

First released

Songs in the Key of Life was recorded primarily at the Record Plant Studios in Los Angeles between 1972 and 1976, with additional sessions at other California studios including the Hit Factory. Stevie Wonder served as the primary creative force and producer, working alongside co-producer John Fischbach, with engineer John Fischbach and others handling the technical aspects of recording the ambitious double album. The production featured extensive use of multitrack recording techniques and synthesizers, particularly the ARP and Prophet synthesizers, which were instrumental in shaping the album's innovative sound. Wonder recorded virtually all the instrumental parts himself, demonstrating his mastery of multiple instruments including keyboards, harmonica, and percussion. The four-year recording period reflected Wonder's meticulous approach to composition and arrangement, resulting in a sprawling 27-track album that became one of the most celebrated and commercially successful works of his career upon its release in 1976.
