Tamla — T13-340C2

Songs in the Key of Life was recorded primarily at the Record Plant in Los Angeles between 1972 and 1976, with additional sessions at other California studios including Crystal Sound and the Hit Factory. Stevie Wonder served as the primary producer alongside John Fischbach, and the album featured engineering work by John Fischbach and other technical staff who helped Wonder realize his ambitious vision. The recording process was notably extended and meticulous, with Wonder utilizing multitrack recording techniques and synthesizers extensively, particularly the ARP and Moog synthesizers that became signature elements of the album's sound. The double album was recorded during a period when Wonder had creative and contractual freedom, allowing him to experiment broadly across genres including funk, soul, jazz, and pop. The sessions resulted in a landmark project released in 1976 that showcased Wonder's skills as a musician, songwriter, and producer across 21 tracks spanning nearly 144 minutes of music.
