The Dream of the Blue Turtles — Sting

Sting

The Dream of the Blue Turtles

First released

The Dream of the Blue Turtles, Sting's debut solo album released in 1985, was primarily recorded at The Church Studios in London, a facility owned by Richard Branson's Virgin Records. The album was produced by Sting alongside Miles Copeland III and key co-producer/engineer Hugh Padgham, who brought extensive experience from his work with Genesis and Phil Collins. The recording sessions took place between late 1984 and early 1985 and featured prominent jazz and world music influences, with live musicians including saxophonist Branford Marsalis, bassist Darryl Jones, and keyboardist Kenny Kirkland forming the core of the album's sound. Padgham's production approach emphasized live instrumentation and organic recording techniques rather than heavy synthesizer production, which was characteristic of mid-1980s pop music. The album's commercial success and critical acclaim marked a significant transition point for Sting's career, establishing him as a solo artist independent from The Police while maintaining creative control through the collaborative production process.
