Sufjan Stevens recorded Illinois (also known as Sufjan Stevens Invites You to Come and Explore the Expansive Soul of the State of Illinois) primarily at Menomena's home studio in Portland, Oregon and at various other locations between 2004 and 2005. The album was produced by Stevens himself along with producer John Heimer, with significant contributions from arranger/multi-instrumentalist Nico Muhly. Stevens employed an expansive orchestral approach with numerous instruments including strings, horns, and unconventional percussion, recorded across multiple sessions to build up the dense layered arrangements characteristic of the album. The production represented a significant creative evolution from his previous work, featuring more elaborate instrumentation and conceptual ambition, positioning it as one of the defining indie rock albums of the mid-2000s.
