Sufjan Stevens recorded "Illinois" primarily at Jackpot! Recording Studios in Portland, Oregon, with additional sessions at other locations between 2004 and 2005. The album was produced by Stevens himself along with engineers including John Congleton, who played a crucial role in shaping its expansive orchestral sound. Stevens employed a maximalist production approach, layering numerous instruments including strings, woodwinds, and percussion to create the album's dense, symphonic arrangements, representing a significant departure from the more minimal sound of his previous album "Michigan." The recording sessions utilized both digital and analog techniques, with the album released on March 22, 2005, during a period when Stevens was exploring increasingly ambitious compositional and production methods.
