Laughing Stock — Talk Talk

Talk Talk

Laughing Stock

First released

Laughing Stock, Talk Talk's fifth and final studio album, was recorded at various London studios including CMS Studios and Townhouse Studios between 1990 and 1991. The album was produced by Talk Talk and engineer/producer Paul Stevenson, who played a crucial role in shaping the band's experimental direction during these sessions. The recording process was notably unconventional, featuring live orchestral arrangements, improvisation, and extensive use of analog tape technology, with the band rejecting conventional pop structures in favor of jazz-influenced and abstract soundscapes. The production reflected the band's artistic evolution toward avant-garde and experimental music, moving away from their synth-pop origins. Released in 1991, the album has since been recognized as a landmark in alternative and experimental music, influencing numerous artists in the post-rock and experimental genres that followed.
