Laughing Stock, Talk Talk's fifth studio album released in 1991, was recorded at various London studios including Pulsation Studios and Town House Studios over an extended period. Producer Tim Friese-Greene, who had worked with the band previously, collaborated closely with the band to create an experimental, jazz-influenced sound that marked a dramatic departure from their earlier synth-pop style. The album featured extensive use of live instrumentation, improvisation, and unconventional recording techniques, with engineer working to capture organic, naturalistic sound textures rather than polished production.
