Phaedra was recorded at Conny Plank's studio in Cologne, Germany in 1974, with the legendary German producer and engineer Conny Plank overseeing the sessions. The album marked Tangerine Dream's transition to a more accessible, sequencer-driven sound, featuring the iconic Moog synthesizer as a central instrument rather than as supplementary texture. Plank's expertise in electronic music production and studio innovation was instrumental in shaping the album's crisp, pioneering synthesizer arrangements and spatial sound design. The recording utilized state-of-the-art analog equipment of the period and established many of the sonic characteristics that would define the band's commercially successful 1970s output. Phaedra became one of the most influential electronic music albums of the decade, reaching number one on the UK classical music charts and significantly expanding the audience for progressive synthesizer music.
