Phaedra — Tangerine Dream

Tangerine Dream

Phaedra

First released

Phaedra was recorded at the Dierks Studios in Berlin over several weeks in 1973, marking Tangerine Dream's first album for the Virgin Records label. The album was produced by the band members themselves—Edgar Froese, Christopher Franke, and Peter Baumann—without an external producer, allowing them complete creative control over the sound and arrangement. The recording utilized analog tape equipment and synthesizers including the Moog synthesizer, which became central to the album's electronic aesthetic and helped define the Berlin School of electronic music. The band employed innovative production techniques such as extensive use of sequencers and layered synthesizer textures to create the album's immersive, evolving soundscapes. Released in March 1974, Phaedra became a commercial and critical success, establishing Tangerine Dream as pioneers of electronic music and influencing countless artists in the ambient and progressive electronic genres.
