The Beach Boys' "Smile" was recorded primarily at Western Recorders and other Los Angeles studios between 1966 and 1967 under the creative direction of Brian Wilson, who served as composer and de facto producer alongside engineer Carl Zwislocki and other studio personnel. The sessions were characterized by experimental production techniques, including unconventional instrumentation, studio layering, and innovative arrangements that pushed the boundaries of pop music production at the time. Recording was fragmented and perfectionistic, with Wilson frequently re-recording sections and spending considerable time on individual vocal harmonies and orchestral arrangements. The project remained incomplete and officially unreleased during the 1960s due to Wilson's perfectionism and the challenges of translating his ambitious compositional vision into finished recordings. A reconstructed version was eventually released in 2004, compiled from the original session recordings with some completion and arrangement work by other musicians and producers.
