The Beach Boys' "Smile" was recorded primarily at Gold Star Studios and other Los Angeles locations between 1966 and 1967 under the direction of Brian Wilson, who served as the album's principal composer and producer. The sessions were marked by experimental recording techniques, including the use of unconventional instruments and innovative studio arrangements that pushed the boundaries of popular music production at the time. Engineer Chuck Britz played a crucial role in realizing Wilson's ambitious sonic vision, while the project was heavily influenced by the competitive musical landscape following The Beatles' release of "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band." The album remained incomplete and officially unreleased during the 1960s due to Wilson's perfectionism and personal struggles, with only the single "Good Vibrations" achieving major commercial success. The surviving recordings were eventually compiled and released posthumously in various forms, making "Smile" one of the most legendary unfinished projects in rock music history.
