Surf's Up — The Beach Boys

The Beach Boys

Surf's Up

First released

Surf's Up was recorded primarily at The Beach Boys' own Brother Studios in Los Angeles between 1969 and 1971, with additional sessions at other California locations. The album was produced by The Beach Boys themselves, with the band taking greater control of their sound compared to previous years. Engineer Carl Fortina and others worked with the group to capture a more organic, stripped-down aesthetic that marked a return toward their earlier surf rock roots while incorporating progressive studio techniques. The production process was lengthy and involved multiple revisions, reflecting the band's evolving creative direction during a transitional period in their career. The album's release in 1971 showcased a band attempting to reconnect with their musical identity while adapting to the changing landscape of popular music.
