Revolver — The Beatles

The Beatles

Revolver

First released

Revolver was recorded at EMI's Abbey Road Studios in London between March and April 1966, marking The Beatles' final album to feature live orchestral overdubs and their first to explore extensive studio experimentation. Producer George Martin and engineer Geoff Emerick oversaw the sessions, with Emerick's innovative techniques including close microphone placement on drums and the use of varispeeding to alter instrumental pitches. The album showcased pioneering use of backwards recording, automatic double tracking, Leslie speaker effects, and orchestral arrangements that expanded rock music's sonic possibilities. The sessions reflected the band's shift toward studio-focused production following their decision to stop touring, allowing them to dedicate more time to studio manipulation and creative layering. Revolver's release in August 1966 established new technical standards for rock recording and directly influenced the psychedelic and progressive music movements that followed.
