Mobile Fidelity Sound Lab — MFSL 1-274

The Cars' self-titled debut album was recorded in 1977 at Capital Studios in Hollywood, California. The album was produced by Roy Thomas Baker and the band themselves, with Baker bringing his expertise from his work with Queen. Engineer Mike Stone contributed to the technical aspects of the recording, helping capture the band's new wave and power pop sound using state-of-the-art studio equipment of the era. The production emphasized clean, polished vocals and prominent synthesizers alongside guitar-driven arrangements, establishing a signature sound that defined new wave rock in the late 1970s. Released in June 1978, the album achieved significant commercial success and became a landmark release that helped bridge punk sensibilities with pop accessibility during a pivotal moment in rock music history.
