Disintegration was recorded primarily at Miles Copeland's Chateau de Marouatte in France and at RAK Studios in London between 1988 and 1989. The album was produced by The Cure's Robert Smith alongside engineer Dave Allen, who helped shape the lush, layered sound that defined the record. Smith experimented extensively with synthesizers, drum machines, and multi-tracked vocals, creating dense arrangements that marked a departure from the band's previous work. The production process was meticulous and time-consuming, reflecting Smith's perfectionist approach and his intention to create an expansive, emotionally immersive sonic landscape. Released in 1989, Disintegration became The Cure's most commercially successful and critically acclaimed album, influencing gothic rock and alternative music throughout the following decade.
