Pornography — The Cure

The Cure

Pornography

First released

Pornography was recorded at the Miles Copeland-owned Ambrose Studios in Brighton during the summer of 1981 and produced by The Cure themselves along with engineer Phil Thornalley. The album was tracked during a period of significant creative and personal turmoil for the band, with singer Robert Smith struggling with depression and substance use issues that directly influenced the dark, claustrophobic sonic landscape. The production employed relatively sparse instrumentation and emphasized murky, heavily processed vocals and guitars, creating an intentionally claustrophobic atmosphere that departed from the more accessible sound of their previous album Seventeen Seconds. The band used extensive studio experimentation including heavy use of reverb, echo, and synthesizer treatments to achieve the album's signature dense and oppressive production style. Released in 1982, Pornography marked The Cure's creative peak in their early period and became influential in establishing the gothic rock sound despite its commercial underperformance at the time.
