Mobile Fidelity Sound Lab — UDSACD 2060

"What Were Once Vices Are Now Habits" was recorded in 1974 at the Record Plant in Los Angeles and produced by Ted Templeman, who had become the primary architect of the Doobie Brothers' signature sound. The album continued the band's evolution toward a more polished, radio-friendly rock style while maintaining their blues and country rock influences. Recording engineer Al Schmitt, known for his work on major rock and pop albums, helped capture the band's tighter performances and enhanced production values compared to their earlier work. The album was released in March 1974 and marked a commercially successful period for the band, featuring hit singles like "Black Water" and "Jesus Is Just Alright." The production reflected the early-to-mid 1970s studio techniques that prioritized clear vocal harmonies, layered instrumentation, and a more mainstream rock approach.
