The Doors' self-titled debut album was recorded at Sunset Sound Recorders in Hollywood, California between August and September 1965. Producer Paul A. Rothchild, who would become integral to the band's sound, oversaw the sessions with engineer Bruce Botnick, establishing a collaborative relationship that defined the band's early recordings. The album was recorded in a relatively short timeframe and captured the band's raw, blues-influenced rock sound with minimal overdubbing, emphasizing live performance energy. Notable technical choices included capturing Jim Morrison's vocals prominently in the mix and utilizing innovative keyboard arrangements from Ray Manzarek's Fender Rhodes piano. The album's production reflected the emerging Los Angeles rock scene of the mid-1960s and helped establish the template for psychedelic rock production that would influence numerous artists throughout the decade.
