The Jesus and Mary Chain

Psychocandy

First released

Psychocandy, The Jesus and Mary Chain's debut album released in 1985, was recorded at Linn Studios in Edinburgh during 1984 with producer Joe Foster and engineer John Loder. The album featured the band's signature wall-of-sound production style, created by layering distorted guitars, feedback, and lo-fi textures over pop-influenced songwriting, which Foster and the band deliberately crafted to clash with the melodic hooks beneath. The recording process involved extensive use of heavily processed vocal and instrumental tracks, with much of the distortion and noise created both during recording and through post-production techniques. Psychocandy became an influential debut that helped establish the noise pop genre, with its production approach becoming highly influential in alternative and indie music throughout the late 1980s and beyond.
