The Mahavishnu Orchestra with John McLaughlin

The Inner Mounting Flame

First released

The Inner Mounting Flame was recorded at the Record Plant in New York in 1971 and released in 1972. The album was produced by John McLaughlin and engineered by Bill Szymczyk, who would later become known for his work with the Eagles. The recording captured the Mahavishnu Orchestra's fusion of jazz, rock, and Indian classical music with state-of-the-art studio technology for the time. The album featured live-sounding arrangements that showcased McLaughlin's revolutionary electric guitar work alongside Billy Cobham's precision drumming and the band's complex interplay. Its commercial and critical success helped establish fusion as a major force in popular music during the early 1970s.
