We’re Only in It for the Money

First released

"We're Only in It for the Money" was recorded at Gold Star Studios in Hollywood between 1967 and 1968 under the direction of Frank Zappa, who served as composer, arranger, and de facto producer. The album was engineered primarily by Phil Study and featured innovative multitrack recording techniques and extensive overdubbing, which was relatively experimental for rock music at the time. Zappa's meticulous approach to production involved numerous takes and creative manipulation of vocal and instrumental tracks to achieve the satirical sound he envisioned. The recording sessions took place during a period of significant social and political upheaval, with Zappa deliberately crafting the album as a parody of the counterculture movement and the Beatles' "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band." The album's complex layering and avant-garde production choices pushed the technical capabilities of the studio and established new standards for rock album production.
