Synchronicity — The Police

The Police

Synchronicity

First released

Synchronicity, The Police's fifth and final studio album, was recorded primarily at the renowned Le Studio in Morin-Heights, Quebec, between December 1982 and January 1983, with additional sessions at other facilities. The album was produced by The Police themselves alongside Hugh Padgham, an engineer known for his innovative drum production techniques that became a signature sound of the era. The recording process was marked by significant creative tension among band members, particularly between Sting's increasingly prominent songwriting and the collaborative dynamics, which would contribute to the band's initial breakup shortly after the album's release. Padgham's use of gated reverb on Phil Collins' drums and application of advanced recording techniques helped define the album's distinctive sonic character. Released in June 1983, Synchronicity became a massive commercial success and cultural phenomenon, topped charts worldwide, and established The Police as one of the biggest bands of the 1980s before their initial dissolution in 1986.
