Goats Head Soup was recorded between March and August 1973 across multiple studios including the Rolling Stones' mobile studio, Island Records' studios in Jamaica, and various facilities in Los Angeles and London. The album was produced by Jimmy Miller, who had worked with the Stones on previous successful releases, and marked a transitional period as the band worked with engineer Eddie Kramer and other technical staff at different locations. The recording sessions reflected the band's desire to experiment with their sound while maintaining their blues-rock foundation, incorporating influences from reggae and other styles encountered during their Jamaica recording sessions. Notable technical choices included the use of the Rolling Stones' mobile recording unit, which allowed flexibility in capturing live takes with minimal studio artificiality.
