Tattoo You was recorded primarily at EMI Studios in London and The Rolling Stones' mobile studio between 1972 and 1981, compiled from various sessions across that decade rather than being recorded as a cohesive project. The album was produced by The Rolling Stones themselves along with Chris Kimsey, who served as both engineer and co-producer, overseeing the assembly and completion of the material. The production involved piecing together numerous outtakes and unreleased tracks from previous recording sessions, with Kimsey helping to complete and enhance songs that had been left unfinished. Notable technical choices included the use of synthesizers and overdubs to refresh older recordings and bring them into the early 1980s sonic landscape. Released in August 1982, the album marked a significant commercial comeback for the band and demonstrated their ability to revitalize decade-old material into a cohesive contemporary release.
