Rough Trade — ROUGH 96
The original 1986 UK Rough Trade pressing is widely regarded on SHF as the definitive analog version, prized for its warm, natural tonality.

The Queen Is Dead, the third studio album by The Smiths, was recorded primarily at London's RAK Studios and other facilities between late 1985 and early 1986. The album was produced by the band's longtime collaborator John Porter, who had worked with them since their debut, alongside engineer Stephen Street, who became increasingly influential in shaping the album's sound. The production marked a departure toward a fuller, more orchestral arrangement compared to their previous work, featuring prominent use of strings and other instrumentation arranged by Craig Leon. The recording took place during a period of creative tension within the band, and the album's sessions reflected The Smiths' desire to expand their sonic palette beyond the guitar-driven indie rock of their earlier releases. Released in June 1986, the album represented the band at their commercial and critical peak before their split in 1987.
