Mobile Fidelity Sound Lab — UDSACD 2207

Monk's Dream was recorded at Columbia Records' studios in New York between March and October 1962, featuring Thelonious Monk's quartet with Charlie Rouse on tenor saxophone, John Ore on bass, and Frankie Dunlop on drums. The album was produced by John Hammond and Teo Macero, both influential Columbia producers who oversaw much of Monk's recording output during this period. The sessions captured a mix of original compositions and standards, with the recording techniques reflecting the technical capabilities of early 1960s Columbia studios, prioritizing clarity of Monk's piano work. This was one of Monk's most commercially and artistically successful albums for Columbia Records, helping to establish him as a major jazz artist during the label's classical and jazz expansion. The album's release in 1963 solidified Monk's position in mainstream jazz during a period when bebop pioneers were gaining broader recognition.
