Loaded was recorded at Atlantic Studios in New York between March and July 1970 and marked The Velvet Underground's final studio album with founding member Lou Reed. The album was produced by Adrian Bowen and the band themselves, with engineer Val Valentin overseeing the technical aspects of the sessions. Unlike the band's previous experimental work, Loaded featured a more accessible and song-oriented approach, with Reed focusing on conventional rock structures and pop-influenced melodies while maintaining the group's distinctive lyrical edge. The production emphasized clearer vocals and more polished arrangements compared to the band's earlier recordings, reflecting both the group's evolution and changing commercial pressures within the music industry. The album was completed and mixed by early fall 1970, though it would not be officially released until November 1971 due to contractual and label issues.
