Elephant was recorded primarily at Hitsville U.S.A., the legendary Motown studio in Detroit, during 2002-2003, marking The White Stripes' return to their hometown after recording previous albums elsewhere. The album was produced by the band themselves alongside engineer/producer Dave Fridmann, known for his work with The Flaming Lips, who helped shape the album's more expansive sonic palette compared to earlier releases. Jack White employed various vintage recording techniques and utilized the studio's classic Motown equipment, contributing to the warmer, more polished sound that distinguished Elephant from the rawer aesthetics of White Stripes' preceding work. The recording sessions reflected the band's maturation as musicians and their desire to explore more ambitious arrangements and production styles while maintaining their minimalist two-piece foundation. Released in 2003, Elephant became their commercial breakthrough and most successful album, establishing The White Stripes as major figures in early 2000s rock music.
