Quadrophenia was recorded between 1973 and 1974 at multiple London studios including The Who's own Ramport Studios, as well as Record Plant Studios and other facilities. The album was produced by The Who's Pete Townshend along with engineer Glyn Johns, who played a crucial role in shaping the sound and arrangement of the ambitious double album. The recording process involved extensive use of synthesizers and keyboards, which were still relatively novel in rock music at the time, and featured contributions from orchestral arrangements to complement the band's traditional rock sound. The project was conceived as a rock opera set in 1960s mod culture, requiring careful production to balance the narrative concept with the band's live instrumental prowess. The album's production reflected the band's evolution toward more sophisticated studio techniques while maintaining the raw energy that defined their earlier work.
