The Who by Numbers was recorded between 1974 and 1975 at The Who's own Ramport Studios in London, as well as at other facilities including Record Plant Studios. The album was produced by The Who themselves, with engineer Glyn Johns playing a significant role in the recording and mixing process. The project marked a departure from their previous ambitious rock operas, with Pete Townshend focusing on more introspective and personal songwriting that reflected his growing disillusionment with fame and the rock lifestyle.
