Tommy — The Who

The Who

Tommy

First released

Tommy was recorded primarily at ITC Studios in London between 1968 and 1969, with additional sessions at other facilities including Decca Studios. The album was produced by Kit Lambert and The Who themselves, with engineer Glyn Johns playing a crucial role in the recording and mixing process. Pete Townshend composed the rock opera as an ambitious concept album exploring themes of a deaf, dumb, and blind boy who becomes a pinball champion, representing a significant creative departure from the band's previous work. The production involved innovative studio techniques for its time, including extensive use of synthesizers and orchestral arrangements to support the narrative structure, with the band recording live performances alongside studio overdubs. Released in May 1969, Tommy became one of the most influential rock albums of the era and established The Who as serious artists capable of extended compositional work beyond conventional song formats.
