Brilliant Corners — Thelonious Monk

Thelonious Monk

Brilliant Corners

First released

Brilliant Corners was recorded at Columbia Records' 30th Street Studio in New York between 1956 and 1957, with sessions produced by George Avakian. The album featured Thelonious Monk's quartet with saxophonist John Coltrane, bassist Wilbur Ware, and drummer Shadow Wilson, showcasing Monk's complex compositions and angular piano style during a pivotal period in his career. The recording sessions were notably challenging, with multiple takes required due to the difficulty of the music and Monk's exacting standards, particularly evident in the title track which required numerous attempts to achieve the desired result. The album was historically significant as one of the first major label releases to document Monk's mature compositional approach and his collaboration with the young Coltrane, though it initially received limited commercial success upon release in 1957.
