Jazzland — JLP 946S

"Thelonious Monk with John Coltrane" was recorded at the Van Gelder Studio in Hackensack, New Jersey on April 16, 1957, during a single session engineered by the legendary Rudy Van Gelder. The album featured the quartet of Monk (piano), Coltrane (tenor saxophone), Wilbur Ware (bass), and Shadow Wilson (drums), capturing some of the earliest documented collaborations between these two giants of modern jazz. Van Gelder's meticulous recording techniques and the intimate studio setting allowed for high-fidelity captures of the musicians' interplay, documenting a pivotal moment in jazz history when Coltrane was transitioning from the Miles Davis circle to his own artistic path. The session was released on the Riverside Records label and marked an important early documentation of Monk's music during a period of increasing recognition for the pianist and composer.
