Jazzland — JLP 946S

"Thelonious Monk with John Coltrane" was recorded at the Van Gelder Studio in Hackensack, New Jersey on April 16, 1957, engineered by the legendary Rudy Van Gelder. The sessions were produced by Orrin Keepnews for Riverside Records and featured the quartet with bassist Wilbur Ware and drummer Shadow Wilson. The album documents one of jazz history's most significant collaborations, capturing the only studio recordings of Monk and Coltrane together during their brief but artistically fruitful partnership. Van Gelder's engineering expertise was crucial in capturing the nuances of both musicians' playing styles on the intimate recording.
