Closing Time — Tom Waits

Tom Waits

Closing Time

First released

Closing Time was recorded in 1973 at Los Angeles studios and marked Tom Waits' debut album, establishing his distinctive gravelly vocal style and jazzy, avant-garde approach to rock and pop music. The album was produced by Jerry Yester, who helped shape Waits' experimental sound by incorporating unconventional instrumentation and production techniques typical of early 1970s avant-garde music. Waits performed much of the material himself alongside session musicians, recording in an intimate style that captured his raw, theatrical delivery. The album's sparse arrangements and focus on Waits' narrative songwriting reflected the singer-songwriter tradition of the era while pushing against mainstream conventions. Closing Time received cult recognition and laid the foundation for Waits' decades-long career as an innovative and uncompromising artist.
