Island — 90095-1

Swordfishtrombones, released in 1983, was recorded at the Los Angeles Record Plant and produced by Tom Waits in collaboration with Bones Howe, an experienced engineer and producer known for his work with The Fifth Dimension. The album marked a significant departure from Waits' previous work, featuring experimental instrumentation including unconventional percussion, prepared piano, and found sounds that created a distinctive industrial and avant-garde aesthetic. Waits worked closely with musicians including Kelvin Shbutler on bass and various session players to develop the raw, unpolished sound that characterized the record. The production process emphasized organic recording techniques and minimal overdubbing, capturing performances that often sounded deliberately primitive and textured rather than commercially polished. This album represented a creative turning point for Waits, establishing the artistic direction he would continue to explore throughout the 1980s and beyond.
