The album was produced by Tool and engineer David Bottrill, who had previously worked with the band on their earlier work. The recording sessions were notably lengthy and experimental, with the band exploring extended instrumental passages and complex time signatures, particularly on tracks like the title song "Lateralus" which features the Fibonacci sequence in its vocal melody. Bottrill and the band utilized both analog and digital recording techniques to capture the dense, layered arrangements. The production process reflected the band's commitment to perfectionism and creative control, resulting in a gap of five years between this album and their previous release.
