Tool

Ænima

First released

Ænima was recorded at One on One Recording Studios in Los Angeles between 1995 and 1996, with producer David Bottrill and engineer Paul D. Lehrman overseeing the sessions. The band worked with mixing engineer Florian AP to refine the complex arrangements, which featured intricate polyrhythms and layered instrumentation that pushed the studio's capabilities of the mid-1990s. Tool employed innovative recording techniques for the era, including detailed vocal layering and unconventional approaches to capturing drums to achieve their signature dense, textured sound. The album's production occurred during a period when Tool was establishing themselves as progressive metal innovators, following their breakthrough success with "Undertow." The sessions resulted in a technically ambitious record that took considerable time to perfect, reflecting the band's meticulous approach to songwriting and production.
