Charisma — CAS 1051
The original 1971 UK Charisma 'pink scroll' pressing is the reference version, prized for its warm, dynamic analog sound.

Pawn Hearts, the final studio album by Van der Graaf Generator, was recorded in 1971 at a combination of locations including Trident Studios in London, where the band worked with producer Gail Colson who had previously worked with the band. The album was engineered by John Burns and reflected the group's ambitious progressive rock approach during a period of creative intensity before their initial disbandment. The recording sessions captured the band's complex arrangements featuring Peter Hammill's distinctive vocals, Thijs van Leer's flute and keyboards, and the intricate interplay of the rhythm section. Notable for its dense production and layered instrumentation, the album showcased experimental studio techniques that were contemporary to early 1970s progressive rock production methods. Pawn Hearts stands as a significant work in the band's catalog, representing their artistic maturity before internal tensions led to their breakup in 1972.
