Astral Weeks — Van Morrison

Van Morrison

Astral Weeks

First released

Astral Weeks was recorded at A&R Studios in New York over three sessions in late 1968, with producer Lewis Merenstein overseeing the project. Van Morrison worked with an ensemble of accomplished jazz and classical musicians including bassist Richard Davis, drummer Connie Kay, and string players, creating an intimate and organic sound that departed from conventional rock production. The album was recorded live in the studio with minimal overdubbing, allowing the musicians to interact naturally and capture spontaneous performances. Engineer Tom Dowd and the A&R Studios team utilized two-track and multitrack recording techniques to balance Morrison's vocals with the orchestral arrangements. The production reflected a transitional moment in rock music, blending folk, jazz, and classical influences during a period when such genre-crossing was relatively uncommon in mainstream recording.
