Astral Weeks — Van Morrison

Van Morrison

Astral Weeks

First released

Astral Weeks was recorded at Century Sound Studios in New York City over three sessions in late 1968, with producer Lewis Merenstein overseeing the project. The album featured a stripped-down approach with Van Morrison's vocals recorded live in the studio alongside jazz musicians including bassist Richard Davis and vibraphonist Warren Smith, creating an intimate and spontaneous sound. The recording sessions were marked by minimal overdubbing and a focus on capturing genuine performances rather than polished studio production, which was unconventional for the era. Engineer Brooks Arthur helped capture the sessions, and the album's unique blend of folk, jazz, and soul textures emerged from Morrison's desire to move away from the rock sound of his previous work. Released in November 1968, Astral Weeks initially had modest commercial success but later became recognized as a landmark album that influenced generations of artists across multiple genres.
