Astral Weeks — Van Morrison

Van Morrison

Astral Weeks

First released

Astral Weeks was recorded at Century Sound Studios in New York City in November 1968 over just three sessions, with producer Lewis Merenstein overseeing the project. Van Morrison worked with a small ensemble of jazz musicians including bassist Richard Davis, drummer Connie Kay, and vibraphonist Warren Smith, creating an intimate, largely live recording approach that captured spontaneous performances rather than heavily layered overdubs. The album was engineered by Tom Dowd and recorded using minimal arrangement and production techniques that emphasized musicianship and interplay between the musicians. This stripped-down, jazz-influenced production style was unconventional for rock music in 1968 and distinguished Astral Weeks from the heavily produced pop-rock records of its era. The recording's sparse, organic sound has become iconic and influential in popular music history, released in November 1968 to minimal initial commercial success.
