Moondance was recorded in 1969 at the Warner Bros. Studios in Burbank, California, and produced by Van Morrison and Lewis Merenstein. The album was engineered by Neil Levine and featured a five-piece band including Jeff Labes on keyboards, Garry Mallaber on drums, and John Platania on guitar, creating a cohesive live-in-studio sound that departed from Morrison's previous experimental approach. Morrison's vocal delivery and the band's tight arrangements were achieved through multiple takes and overdubs, with the sessions capturing the warmth and spontaneity that defined the soul and jazz-influenced record. The production prioritized organic instrumentation and Morrison's intimate vocal performances, avoiding the heavy orchestration of some contemporary work. Released in February 1970, Moondance became one of Morrison's most acclaimed and commercially successful albums, establishing the template for his artistic direction throughout the 1970s.
