Speak No Evil — Wayne Shorter

Wayne Shorter

Speak No Evil

First released

Speak No Evil was recorded on December 24, 1964, at Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey, during a single session with producer Alfred Lion supervising for Blue Note Records. The session featured Wayne Shorter on saxophone with a quartet including Herbie Hancock on piano, Reggie Workman on bass, and Elvin Jones on drums. Engineer Rudy Van Gelder captured the performance using his characteristic close-miked technique at his studio facility, emphasizing clarity and presence across all instruments. The album was released in 1966 and has become recognized as a landmark of modal and post-bop jazz, with its sparse harmonic approach and compositional sophistication influencing generations of jazz musicians.
