Blue Note — BLP 4194

Speak No Evil was recorded on December 24, 1964, at Van Gelder Studio in Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey, with engineer Rudy Van Gelder overseeing the sessions. The album was produced by Alfred Lion of Blue Note Records and features the classic quintet of Wayne Shorter, Herbie Hancock, Ron Carter, Elvin Jones, and Lee Morgan on trumpet. The recording was completed in a single session, capturing the group's performance with minimal overdubs in keeping with Blue Note's live-in-studio approach of the era. Van Gelder's engineering techniques, particularly his microphone placement and mixing approach, contributed significantly to the album's distinctive sound and tight ensemble playing. The album, released in 1966, became one of the most influential jazz albums of the 1960s and exemplified the modal and free jazz aesthetics that were defining post-bop jazz during this period.
