Original Recordings Group — ORG 113

Heavy Weather, released in 1977, was recorded at Columbia Records' studios in New York and engineered by producer Hiram Pagan with mixing by George Marino. The album marked a significant shift toward more accessible, funk-influenced jazz fusion compared to the band's previous work, featuring Joe Zawinul's synthesizers and Jaco Pastorius's fretless bass as prominent elements. Recording took place during a period when the band members were working with increasingly sophisticated production techniques, incorporating layered synthesizers and modern recording technology available in mid-1970s professional studios. The album became Weather Report's most commercially successful release, reaching platinum status, partly due to the hit single "Birdland" and its polished production approach that balanced complex musicianship with broader appeal.
