Heavy Weather

First released

Heavy Weather, Weather Report's eighth studio album released in 1977, was recorded at Columbia Studios in New York City between February and March 1977. The album was produced by the band members themselves—Joe Zawinul, Wayne Shorter, Jaco Pastorius, Chester Thompson, and Alphonso Mouzon—with engineer Roy Halee, a seasoned Columbia Records engineer who had worked extensively with artists like Simon and Garfunkel. The recording sessions benefited from advances in fusion production techniques and marked the peak of the group's commercial and critical success during the peak era of jazz fusion. Notable technical choices included prominent use of Jaco Pastorius's fretless bass as a lead instrument and the incorporation of funk and R&B rhythmic elements alongside jazz improvisation. The album's lead single, "Birdland," became one of the group's most recognizable compositions and exemplified their sophisticated approach to blending complex jazz harmonies with accessible melodies.
