A Ghost Is Born

First released

A Ghost Is Born, Wilco's fourth studio album, was recorded primarily at Chicago's Soma Electronic Music Studios between 2003 and 2004, with additional sessions at The Loft in Chicago. The album was produced by the band themselves alongside Jeff Tweedy and mixer/engineer Tom Schick, with significant contributions from sound engineer John Congleton. The recording process was notably experimental, featuring extensive use of analog tape, unconventional microphone techniques, and digital manipulation to create dense, layered soundscapes that marked a departure from the band's previous work. The album's production reflected the band's growing technical ambition and willingness to embrace studio experimentation following their 2002 self-titled release. A Ghost Is Born was released in September 2004 and received critical acclaim for its adventurous sonic palette and complex arrangements.
