Yankee Hotel Foxtrot was primarily recorded at Wilco's loft studio in Chicago, known as the Wilco Loft, with additional work done at other studios between 2000 and 2001. The album was produced by the band itself, with Jim O'Rourke brought in during the mixing stage to help shape the final sound, while the recording was engineered by Mark Greenberg among others. The production was marked by extensive experimentation, incorporating noise loops, unconventional sonic textures, electronic treatments, and layered arrangements that blended lo-fi aesthetics with pop songcraft, reflecting frontman Jeff Tweedy's desire to push beyond the band's alt-country roots. Internal tensions during recording led to the departure of original member Jay Bennett, who had clashed with Tweedy over the album's creative direction. The album famously became the subject of a music industry controversy when Reprise Records, a subsidiary of AOL Time Warner, declined to release it, leading Wilco to eventually release it on Nonesuch Records, ironically also a Time Warner label, in April 2002 after streaming it for free on their website.
